LSS,….I broke the weld at the bottom of the tank, had it repaired, which in turned bubbled up the sealant in the tank. Now since part of the tank is down to bare metal, I am getting residue clogging up my fuel filter. to have it the inside stripped and recoated may cost a lot. Was pricing out the availability / cost of a new tank. Didn’t know if there still might be one left over, or could point me in the right direction for a new one.
tks
Those tanks were custom made by Metal Monsters in Long Beach, CA and are long gone… if its not repairable you’ll need to look for a replacement and have mounts custom made.
There is a product called “Red-Kote” specifically made to coat the inside of gas tanks that have leaking problems.
I have an old 1988 Yamaha Trail Way motorcycle that sat for years and rusted the inside of the tank.
This will cover rust but I don’t recommend it.
After some research I discovered that if you put a good handful of misc nuts and bolt in the tank and swish it around long enough it will remove any rust you have.
BUT go to WalMart and get you a big can of air rifle BB’s ๐ Works much better ๐
Preferably if you have a friend with access to a paint shaker(if your nuts enough like me :)) then that will do the job fast ๐
I’m attaching an image of the product here. It can be purchased at most auto stores.
Good Luck
I have an 04′ Raider and had he exact same problem. I had the tank repaired several times but eventually it would leak again. I recently lowered and raked the bike out a bit farther. When I did, I had the tank “customed” to fit the new lines. When the tank was cut open to be widened, there was junk all in it.
