I have an exhaust leak in my rear engine head (about 1/2 up the engine. Looks like a gasket is shot because I can see the copper plate in the middle of the gasket. My bike is used so I am still working out the bugs. Don’t know all that has been done to it as far as maintenance wise. Just started off with last season with all new fuilds and filters. Now just taking the issues as they come/brake down. I am fairly mechanically inclined to some degree. I have never attempted to takle something like this. Is this something that “Joe Blow” could do or do I really need to take it to a mechanic? Is any special tools required? I have the basic tools. The other question is, if I am going to replace that gasket and what ever gaskets are above the bad one, Should I go ahead and replace the gaskets on the front engine head as well? Because isn’t it a matter of time before the front engine gasket will go
seeing how the rear is shot. I would hate to fix the one (rear gasket) and 1/2 way through the riding season the front ones crap out. I have the S-S 113cui service manual for a guide and torgue specs. Or due you reccomend that I take it to a mechanic?
    Any advise is appriciated.
    tks

I’d take it to a mechanic. Best case they’ll pull the head apart and replace the gasket. But you need to have them pull the head and check the motor studs. If one (or more) have pulled they will need to put certs in the block. If one has pulled and they don’t cert the motor you’ll keep blowing gaskets.

Thanks Steve, I really appriciate all your advise.
What is your opinon as far as if I am going to take off and replace all the gaskets on the rear head, should I just go ahead and replace the ones in the front? There is roughly 2-3000 miles on the bike.
    tks

Sorry those are thread inserts. If the main head studs (steel) have pulled out of the motor case (aluminum) They drill a slightly larger hole in the case and screw in steel inserts and then thread the main studs into the inserts. Some claim this is actually stronger.
