My speedometer/trip counter and odometer recently stopped working, but the tach side of the unit continues to work. Sound like a loose connection or a blown unit? Anyone have any ideas about what may be wrong before I head to the $100/hour guy???
Thanks,
Dan
First remove the sensor unit from the top of the transmission and clean any debris off the magnet. (If there is a lot of debris stop doing burn-outs and power shifting.) If that dosnt fix it remove the back of the speedo and push all the plugs back onto the pins to make sure you have a good connection also you may want to put a piece of foam rubber in there to compress the pins into place when you put the cover back on. These are the two most common reasons the speedo will malfunction. Next remove the speedo and ship it to Dakota Digital to have them inspect/repair.
Finally trace the wire from the tranny sensor and make sure it has no shorts. This can be dramatic as the tank will need to come off and you will need to “open up” the wiring harness. Not for the rookie or the faint of heart.
Last but not least remove the speedo and pretend you own a home-made chopper. (Stop laughing and/or wipe that look of disgust off your face. I met a guy at a rally who removed most of his electrical components to make his bike look cool. :-?) To each his own.
Steve that was too funny! As well as raises a question, Do you have a speedo on your bike?????
I rode down to Jims house (aka Head Janitor, one of the founders of Vengeance and my go-to technical guy.) a couple weeks ago and he said “the bike looks great, does the speedo still work?” Yes. 🙂
Mines a 2003 retrofitted with a 2005 Dakota Digital with the tach. After the conversion, I had several shorts in my handle bars before we got it right. Now it gives me no trouble.
