Hello OH Wise One,
The time has come for me to do a Trans repair. I left the stop sign and when I shifted into second the gears came apart at 15,102 miles.
Should I try to rebuild this trans with Active Spring Tech updated parts or will I be better off in the long run replacing the whole transmission? If I was to replace the transmission what would be a direct fit replacement 6 speed that would require no modification?Dang, I have reservations at Bike Week in AZ for April so I’m going to have to learn about this stuff pretty quick.
Thanks
loop-single-reply.phpFebruary 13, 2016 at 11:06 am #3400the 6 speed trans would be an 89-93 FXST application which all of the aftermarket trans are. I would upgrade to the six speed instead of sinking money into the 5. Unfortunately, all the left side drive transmissions on the market, including Baker, have the same gear flaw built into them which caused your trans failure. No transmissions have been produced since around ’08-’09 so there haven’t been any improvements on the design. I still have access to the transmissions and can you a price on it and also a price on having the 2 upgraded gears installed.
loop-single-reply.phpFebruary 13, 2016 at 2:39 pm #3401I am definitely interested the price of the 6 speed with the upgraded gears installed as long as Visa or Paypal is acceptable payment.
Thanksloop-single-reply.phpFebruary 16, 2016 at 4:49 am #3402Please get back to me quick with the price on the trans with good gears. Otherwise I am going to roll the dice and choose either a 6 speed from Revtech 3 or less roll or a Primo 4 or more roll. The trans that blew is a Ultima 6 speed
Thanksloop-single-reply.phpFebruary 16, 2016 at 5:28 am #3403Call Louie at Active Spring Tech, 626-962-7779. He can build you the trans with upgraded gears for probably about the same as you’re gonna pay for the Rivera. The Rev Tech Trans is a piece of junk.
loop-single-reply.phpFebruary 16, 2016 at 2:16 pm #3404Thanks a bunch, thats what i needed to know. I think what i am going to do is have Louie build me a trans but mean time I am going to install a primo 6. When i get the built trans I will put it in a box with everything required to change the trans on the road and tape it up ready to ship. Then if I have a failure when I am far from safety, I can call my wife and have her overnight the box to me so I can fix the bike where ever I happen to be…and it will still be $1500 cheaper than a Baker trans…
loop-single-reply.phpFebruary 22, 2016 at 4:01 pm #3408Update: I got the Rivera Primo 6 trans installed and is it ever great compared to the Ultima that broke.
I only have one small issue, I put the neutral switch in the trans from the Ultima and I tested it with an OHM meter before I installed, everything was working perfect with the switch. I hooked up the wires but I get no “N” on the speedo display when I put it in neutral, I tried reversing the wires not believing that it would matter and it did not help.
Neutral is SOoooo easy to find on this new trans that I do not need it but it would be nice to have it working. It did work on the old trans after I spent minutes finding neutral. If you know of a quick fix to try please let me know.
Thanksloop-single-reply.phpFebruary 23, 2016 at 12:15 am #3409Sometimes you need to add another washer to space neutral indicator up a little
loop-single-reply.phpFebruary 23, 2016 at 3:26 am #3410Let me be more clear, before I put the trans in the bike I installed the switch and hooked up the ohm meter because I was worried about depth clearances. I moved the shifter out of neutral and back in to neutral with the meter attached to the switch and everything showed good with the switch function. Is one side of the 2 wires that connect to the switch suppose to have power (12 volts)? I think I have an electrical issue maybe with that system.
Update: The only short in the electrical system is between my ears, lol. You are right, I read the function of the switch backwards, so what I have now is when it is in neutral I get no light but when i am in gear the N shows nice and bright. So I will have to back this switch out until it works right and put a washer the right size under it.
Thanksloop-single-reply.phpFebruary 23, 2016 at 6:37 pm #3411well I took the switch out and hooked up the wires and the N light comes on. As I installed the switch with the trans in neutral I get no light even if the switch is only in 1 thread but as soon as I put it in gear the N is on the screen. Now I remember why I am not an electrician. i put the switch back in so things don’t leak and spot tied the wires, I am done with this switch permanently.
