ive been experiencing my bike shutting down in the middle of riding the last 4 or 5 times ive taken it out, maybe 15-25 mile rides each. I have not pin pointed a sequence that creates the shut down to happen, but normally its seems higher rpm in 3rd getting ready to ahift to 4th, and it wont re-start until i turn the key from ON to OFF, and turn the back back to ON again, than it will restart. Almost seems electrical, like i need to reset computer before it will let me re-start.
opions and suggestions appreciated!
without swaying opions of possible issues: heres what i have seen and thought, which may be half nonsense (or more than half – lol)
<p style=”text-align: left;”> i did find a wire with the tip with bare wire exposed, and it was not secured into any harness and i cannot tell if or what it was spliced to prior and than possibly came apart. I wrapped in it in electrical tape shown in the picture of my index finger and thunb. it still starts without wire connected. I thought this bare wire could be touching other metal, and causing something to trip and shut off bike.</p>
Also i checked spark plugs and looks like a decent “roasted marshmallow color”, i have fuel in the tank and fuel filter is full – but sometimes has a tiny air pocket at the top of it, maybe meed to clean carb if something is clogging lines to allow air pocket from tank to fuel filter before it gets to carb.also heard some bikes have a tilt sensor for safety, and maybe that went bad.
a friend also mentioned air/fuel may need adjustment. Im running 113” super sidewinder, short super G carb, and 2-into 1 exhaust.
i really dont know where to start trouble shooting and go through process of elimination.
loop-single-reply.phpApril 27, 2022 at 10:01 am #13358Another guy i just spoke with said if it is shutting down after it warms up, it generally is a sign that the ignition coil is going bad. The Previous owner explained the current ignition coil is roughly 4 years old with maybe 1,000 miles. – think im going to start here..

It’s possible that it’s the coil they are cheap, so it’s worth replacing. Also, inspect and replace your plug wires. Mine had little scaps in them from being tucked behind the coil cover.
The more I think about it this sounds more likely… there are breakers in the key box (if your key box is a square stainless steel box). These breakers can heat up from the rear cylinder heat and pop causing the bike to turn off. It’s worthwhile replacing the breakers and making sure they are insulated from the box.
Last but not least you may have a short that is happening when the bike is vibrating. But the first two are easy so get to them first.
loop-single-reply.phpJune 13, 2023 at 5:28 pm #13482I am having a similar problem and any help would be appreciated. My speedo goes blank and within 10 minutes when slowing down the bike shuts down. Strange it doesn’t shut down when the speedo goes blank but these are the conditions. The head light and blinkers still work. Then after a minute or so it starts back up with no apparent issues????
loop-single-reply.phpJune 13, 2023 at 10:53 pm #13483bike shutting off…. Check the fuses, and thier connections. Trace the wires… The stainless steel box is metal, i personally have tons of wires crammed in there very tight, and connector butts sometimes have strands of wire that can pop out and connect with the metal causing a short. Insulate the wires very good. Maybe wrap the interior of the box with a thing rubber or other insulation. Also check for similar issues with the wire harnesses under the gas tank as well as at the battery under the seat.
Seperately, check the connection to the starter motor. I have a positive terminal with a nut, but the negative/ground wire is connected with a blade connection, and mine was either pulled or vibrated loose. I pinched the blade and shoved it back on the terminal and all is good… now this starter motor connection was for starting the bike, i doubt this would shut the bike off…. Electrical is a pain… especially for non-electrical savvy fools like myself.
Speedometer display issue….My dakota speedo went out too… the LCD screen was blinking like crazy until went all black. The other day i ripped open the throttle and saw a glimpse of the LCD screen look the matrix again. My assumption is a poor connection…somewhere, probably between the frame and gas tank..but hopefully right into the LCD diplay unit itself – but I have not figured this out….yet.
loop-single-reply.phpJune 14, 2023 at 3:42 am #13484I have checked the connections at the battery and the ignition box but nothing appears to be loose, corroded, burnt, etc. Does anyone have the wiring schematic? Thank you for responding and I will check further and see what I come up with.
loop-single-reply.phpJune 14, 2023 at 3:51 pm #13485I’ve had two things cause this with one of my bikes the rear cylinder was heating up the breaker in the key box and causing the breaker to trip. Ten minutes later the bike would start right up. Replace the breakers in the key box and make sure there is a separation between the key box and the breaker (1/4″ foam pad).
The second one for me was a short in the handlebars on the kill switch line. Vibration would cause the wire to randomly short. Pulling over and (unbeknownst to me) turning the handlebars would usually release the short and it would magically start again (it took me 2 full years to figure this out because it was a ghost).
The third one I’ve seen (and easiest to sort out) is vapor lock. If the vent tube on the tank gets blocked and you have a full tank of gas, the heat can cause vapor lock and the bike will shut off, then it cools and restarts. This is most common on the choppers with the flush mount cap.
There is a schematic posted on the forum.
