Power goes from the battery to the ignition switch, from ignition switch to start switch on bars, from start switch to starter relay, from relay to solenoid. Was this bike originally sold in New Jersey?
loop-single-reply.phpJuly 26, 2011 at 7:24 am #2633This may not be much help, but a mechanic told me after I had solved my problem that on a normal motorcycle if your starter switch or relay goes bad you can unplug the hot wire from the Horn and plug it into the solenoid and use the horn switch as starter switch BUT that does NOT work on our machines because these engines will not turn over without the Compression releases opening. So I say all that to say all this,,, you may only get a buzz because the compression releases are not being energized to open and the starter cannot turn the engine. I do know for fact that when mine was giving me hell and I would push it off even in 5th or 6th gear would just drag the back tire if I did not hit the starter button at same time as popping the clutch to open compression releases. Stephen or one of the other guys will have to tell you how to short power to both at the same time. Also the Wiring Diagram posted on the site and exact for my 05 Banshee
loop-single-reply.phpJuly 26, 2011 at 8:38 am #2634Thanks for both new posts I can use all the info I can get. Thr post about thr compression releases needing power makes sense I guess I need to figure a way to get power to both at the same time.
loop-single-reply.phpAugust 2, 2011 at 8:28 am #2635Ok guys I appreciate all the info I finally broke after not being able to get my widow to turn over and brought it to the place I bought the bike from to let them take a shot at finding the problem . I wasee trying to avoid having to pay and arm and a leg , they charge $70 and hour for labor. Ok they had it a few days and called and said ight was the starter which was frozen and wou ldnt turn over at all . They said they hadd sold a few vengeance mc and that almost all of them had problems with spyke starters. They said they just replace them with harley starters which are more reliable. Thats what they did with my bike also needed a battery, which does not surprise me since I have bad to put a new battery in every year ive owned this bike. Also needed plugs . I bave to go there on tues to get the bill I know hd starters arent cheap. Also I sent spyke and email a few weeks ago to explain the problem and thats I had them rebuilbd my starter like a year ago but they wont reply just a heads up to anyone else thats has to deal with spyke . I am glad I wont have to deal with them again.
loop-single-reply.phpAugust 2, 2011 at 10:41 pm #2636It sucks when you have to take your Ferrari to the Ford dealer. You needed new plugs! Fouled plugs keep the bike from starting so most people lay on the starter button trying to get the motor to light which in turn is running the battery well below the 12v required for optimal starter function. It also fries the armature in the starter cuz your drawing too many amps. Add these problems to a bike with a history of battery issues and you have a no bueno situation. No knock on hd but their starters have the weakest drives on the market and the highest failure rate on big cubic inch motors. In my experience, hd techs working off a flat rate manual and making a cursory diagnosis without getting to the root of the problem make the situation worse. As long as you have a battery issue you will always have a starter issue, hd spyke or otherwise. Fouled plugs, wiring issues, bad regulator, riding below 2400 RPM’s with a single phase charging system, wiring on extra accessories, faulty compression releases, using a battery with less than 300 CCA’s etc etc etc will all cause your bike to go through batteries. Also, in one of your earlier posts you said that with the key in the on position all of your grounds were energized? That would mean you have a dead short to the frame somewhere or the relay is pinned wrong. A dead short is the quickest way to drain a battery which would cause a low voltage situation when trying to start the bike. The starter is gonna draw too many amps due to lack of voltage and fry. Hopefully the tech that sold you the plugs, battery and starter caught this?
loop-single-reply.phpAugust 3, 2011 at 9:16 am #2637In all honesty I got the starter for next to nothing so I am not complaining. I personally couldnt tell you who has a better starter I never owned a harley. Gotta be doing something right they have been around 100 + years and I cant even get spyke to return my email. All I know is for right now the bike starts and I was never able to start my bike for more than a few times in a year without having a problem. Hopefully that w ill be the last time I have it fixed I will be putting it for sale, which kind o fcc saddens me . I fell in love with everything about this bike from the minute I saw it on the showroom.floor. I just cant keep dealing with the bugs. Thanks again guys
loop-single-reply.phpAugust 4, 2011 at 11:39 pm #2638Ride it a while and enjoy it. Its like when your super-model girl friend gets out of rehab, you were sick of her when she went in but now you remember what made you fall in love in the first place. When you get rid of her you’ll remember her fondly and will show people her picture the rest of your life.
