I put the new high torque starter on and it has been working good 99% of the time.
When i installed it I checked all the gear teeth and the mesh between the starter pinion and the ring gear, all was good.
What happens is 20 times it turns the motor and everything works great.
then when i hit it to start the starter gear does not fully engage the ring gear and it gives the same sound as when someone hit their key while the engine is running or like a car with a tooth missing on the flywheel when the starter is engaged.
But in my case I let it spin down and when I hit it again it starts totally normal.
Could I have the Jackshaft too tight? or is the spring behind the starter gear worn out.
All advise is appreciated.loop-single-reply.phpJuly 9, 2015 at 10:03 pm #3317Your jackshaft bolt should be torqued to 5 ft lbs (60 in lbs). This is basically just getting it snug and folding the lock tab over onto the bolt head. If you’ve tightened it more than that it can cause binding.
A few other things to check:
Make sure your batter is rated at 300 CCA or higher and is NOT an Odyssey brand battery. Keep your bike on a trickle charger whenever possible.
Make sure you still have the dedicated ground cable from the forward starter bolt to the negative post of the battery intact and that all cables are tight.
Check to see if your bike has a 40 amp starter relay or a 30 amp. If you have a 30 you want to upgrade to a 40. Also, if the trigger wire from the relay to the solenoid is smaller than 10 gauge you’ll want to increase that as well.
Jackshafts usually last the life of the bike unless you have a catastrophic failure. Make sure you clean it up before installing and don’t forget to lube the bearing on the outer primary that the shaft rides in.
loop-single-reply.phpJuly 10, 2015 at 2:55 am #3319Thanks,
I’m pretty sure I overtightened the jackshaft bolt to get the flats lined up with the lock tang. I’ll get a new lock tang washer and reinstall the jackshaft bolt, not quite so tight.
The rest of the things are in order.loop-single-reply.phpMarch 1, 2016 at 4:51 pm #3419UPDATE: This fix worked so far… I have not had to mess with the Jackshaft bolt for over 30 starts.
This Jackshaft bolt has been a major pain. I have installed it with locktite on the threads, used a new washer carefully bent the tab so it contacted the whole side of the bolt. I have done this 3 times in 4 months. The entire bolt, washers, everything backs out. It happened today even with the new transmission which vibrates a lot less than the old one. So I put a split lock washer under the bolt head and then the 2 special washers, I cut into the tang washer deeper so it would reach the bolt head now that it is a little bit higher because of the lock washer. i measured the depth of the cover bearing and how far the bolt will come out to engage and there is room with the split lock washer added. If this does not work I am taking the shaft and the bolt down to a machinest and having them drilled so I can safety wire them LoL!
