I have an 04 Raider and the gas cap is a spring-loaded flush mount with black composit threading. The problem is that the cap will no longer fully thread down into the bung. About one or two turns is all it will thread without a water-pump pliers or rubber strap wrench. I have tried any number of lubes and wire brushes, etc. on the treads. Last year at Sturgis I noticed another Raider with the same tell-tale sign-the gas cap sticks up from the tank surface about half an inch. Any repair, or replacement maker ideas. I am willing to return to a simple surface mount cap, but they have coarse threads?
Stock gas cap threads wont match. The legacy of these caps comes from Matt Hotchs Hotmatch gas cap. A few 03/04 Vengeance bikes have the actual Hotmatch caps.
Most 04/05 have a derivative made by Metal Monsters in Long Beach. Trent at MM was a former West Coast Chopper employee who went in to the tank business and later morphed into Metal Motorsports who make the Foose wheels. Trent got “distracted” along the way and Metal Monsters is no more and Metal Motorsports isnt in the sheetmetal and/or gas cap business.
Last year we had a cap made that will fit the MM tanks and it has wider threads thank the original. That may solve your problem.
First however, get in there with a mag light an a dental pick and make sure there is nothing in the threads. A little piece of tank sealer will cause the cap to bind and make it impossible to turn.
If you need a cap they are $195. (I know its crazy.)
After 05 we went to less sexy standard thread caps that are cheap, unfortunately its an entirely different bung.
