High humidity areas are the only places Ive heard of needing to vent the primary. An inexpensive alternative for venting would be to install 1/4-3/8 inch spacers behind the inspection and derby cover. For a little more ventilation you can drill through the bolt holes for the primary chain adjuster. Ive seen these drilled up to 1/2 inch. Also keep in mind that if you vent your primary in this way youll want to be careful not to get excessive water inside the primary. Be sure to remove the drain plug too.
