Definetely check the compression releases. If they are not operating nothing will help. After the compression releases are functional, a good whiz-bang battery and your stock spyke starter should be all you need.
I had a very similar problem with my Warrior. First off the plugs were NOT tight and secondly when I replaced them with NGKs she started up as soon as I pressed the button. Before that the battery was going dead.
